Small and Great Things

Small Things

It’s interesting to me that the best marriage advice is often simple, common knowledge tidbits. I think they are just much more difficult to apply in real life. This week’s study on turning towards one another fits this same theme. It makes sense, and should be common knowledge, that connecting with your spouse and turning towards them strengthens your marriage. Yet, do couples actually do it? I don’t think it’s applied as often as it could or should be.
Great Things

I loved the scripture in D&C, "Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great." (1) In all honesty, sometimes turning towards my spouse does make me feel weary! Sometimes I want a bit more attention my direction and a bit less attention on him! I often feel overwhelmed by everyday life pressures, our children, our finances, etc, etc. Every now and then, I just want to whine about it for a minute. But, turning towards my husband is, as the scripture states, laying the foundation of a great work. That work in this case, is my beautiful family. Our marriage is our foundation. If we are not carefully attentive to it, we may lose our family’s basis. It may seem like a small thing from the outside. We’re just a high school sweetheart couple that fell in love early and can’t quite get our lives all the way together, but from this foundation is proceeding that which is great. Our two beautiful daughters, our eternal family. The Lord’s work is truly done in the details of our lives.
